It sounds like a mistake made in the middle of clean up.

Let it go.

Unless it’s a Solo cup, why would she think it is trash?

What business does your mom have being mad at him after she threw out something of his without checking first?

As for your question, your role is to have your husband's back and ask him what, if anything, he'd like you to do.

It’s never reasonable to throw away other people’s possessions! Wtf!

What do you mean what's your role? Your role is to be on your husbands side and to yell at your mom

Lesson learned: don't keep stuff like this in common areas. If it's so sentimental, it should be kept with other keepsakes.

You show your DH you have his back. Your mom shouldn’t be throwing away your stuff. She shouldn’t need to grovel, but she should’ve apologized instead of getting defensive and angry. If you haven’t backed your DH up, you should now. And yeah, a little loving tonight will help smooth things over and let you both release a little tension.

If this was a first, let it go after that. If your mom is always like this, set firmer boundaries.

This is why my mom can’t be unsupervised in my house. You need to set firm boundaries

He found it before taking trash put, got angry with her for taking it upon herself to throw out something that belongs to us. Now they're mad at each other -- what is my role in fixing this?

Make passionate love to your DH and he will not be angry anymore.

This. Men aren’t hard. And why didn’t you mom apologize? I’d be mad about that too. Tell him you’re upset too, because you should be. Then sex.

Tell your mom don’t you ever touch our belongings again. And treat her as if anything might go missing.

Wtf? Ask her what the hell was she thinking. It was t a paper cup.
