I identified an awesome tutor through attending Decoding Dyslexia VA meetings (I don't know if there are similar meetings in MD/DC) and I stalked her on FB. When she posted that she had openings, I pounced.

I agree that the rapport with the child is one of the most important pieces. It's not enough to just have someone with a certification if they're not also able to get a lot of hard work out of the child.

You said you live in Silver Spring. We do, too, and use Nancy Richardson, who works from her home in the Woodmoor neighborhood (Four Corners). We LOVE Nancy. She does https://phono-graphix.com/. She is amazing!!! Such a connection to our spirited and easily-frustrated child and to children in general, so inspiring, accessible, and flexible. Our child's evaluator (neuro-psych) also recommended Orton-Gillingham but said Phono-Graphix was fine, too. Our child loves to see Nancy and has improved so much! nnelsonr1@verizon.net Good luck!

+1. We called Ellen and she placed us with a fantastic tutor. it was $75/hour, and SUPER worth it. We've been doing tutoring with them for a few months now and it's been fantastic! We did call another place and they were $120/hr. But I guess that was because they were a "tutoring group". The cheaper person we were dealing with them just directly.

sorry, me again. We were placed w/ a tutor pretty fast (less than a week) b/c we were able to do on-site tutoring at child's school. Child goes to a private school so, it was OK for the tutor to come on-site. I think most public schools won't let a tutor on-site during school hours. Best to check with you child's school first before calling ASDEC. If it had to be post or pre school hours, we would prob have been put on a waiting list.

Found ours through learning essentials. Wendy did a fabulous job matching us to the perfect tutor for us.

If you want a Barton method tutor, you can email Susan Barton (look at the website) and she will send you a list of certified tutors in your area and remote tutors. Don’t be afraid to use remote. We have a great one and she is only $50 an hour.

IME fees can range from $45-$100/session for an academic therapist (AT) trained in an OG-based program to come to your house. A session is 45-60 minutes and your child will need 3 to 5 sessions a week. Some ATs I know will discount the session fee if you have more sessions per week. And if your child is ready and willing, the more you do a week the better at this age. You want to start the intervention as early as possible so that your child does continue to fall behind peers. I think certification (ALTA) is less important than that you select someone who is working with a true OG-based program. Generally there is a lengthy supervision period when training in a quality OG program so you will likely find both certified and uncertified ATs who are well qualified to work with your child. It's not always easy to find one who has openings when you need one, though. Some only work during the school day and generally see students at school (private schools). Others only work in the evenings and may or may not travel to your house.

ASDEC is an excellent first step. I think ASDEC now maintains a waitlist and will take your information (e.g. number of sessions per week, location, time preference) and try to find an AT to work with you. I believe you will need to provide testing/diagnosis documentation to them.
