People bashing Starbucks - it’s one of the few places you can work part time and get health insurance benefits.

It’s the American way. F*ck you for being poor! The shocking lack of empathy is staggering.

I also find it ironic she named her child Atlas.

No one is "kicking"---they are pointing out that she made a number of bad decisions that led her to the situation she is in today. That is no one's fault but her own. The best thing she could do right now for herself and her baby is to try to find an open adoption or foster placement for him for 2 to 3 years while she goes back to school/training to get certified in some type of trade or skill that will enable her to support both herself and him over the long term. Is that an optimal situation? No---but it would be the best thing she could do for herself and her baby in the long term. Working as a Starbucks barista is not a viable career choice. But I bet Alyson winds up getting pregnant again within the next 2 to 3 years, without having gained further job skills, and will elect to continue that pregnancy as well because little Atlas needs a sibling. Short term thinking got her into her predicament and it will keep her there unless she learns to make tough choices.

I have to know how Allyson manages to accidentally get pregnant at all during a time in which birth control pills, condoms, spermicidal lube, and Plan B is all available at the nearest pharmacy?

Allyson seems like the type of person who will find herself woefully unprepared for anything, be it preventing a pregnancy or the aftermath of a natural disaster.

This isn't about being pregnant.... this is about being Allyson.

There were tons of bad decisions she made, starting with the decision to remain pregnant, IMO.

Once the child enters PreK or K child care should get a little easier.

Bad decision-making:

Take this" “When we did the math, I would have been taking home $50 a week, or something ridiculous.”

That's $200 a month - diapers and food.

She should have taken some sort of certification course to qualify her for a job that paid more than Starbucks. They are easy to come by and often offered at community colleges in the evening.

Then there's the moving around - emotional decisions rather than pre-planned financial ones.

Again, lots of bad decisions

Weird post nonetheless.

I was just using the Arguments that conservatives have used over time to show how absurd they are

(And yes, ideally she should think these things while choosing two forms of birth control before engaging in sexual intercourse.)

There is VERY LITTLE SUPPORT for women with young children in this country. We have a very small safety net and poor social services.

Additionally single low income moms are more likely to be investigated by child services and lose custody. I would be furious if my daughter had a child before finishing college. If she was in HS, her only choice would be abortion. Having a child before a college degree is signing up for a life of poverty.

Right to Life isn’t pro-life. It’s pro-birth. Once the baby is here, you are on your own. And had better no need SNAP, Medicaid, WIC, Section 8. “Pro-life”, meanwhile” looksdown their noses at you and make snarky comments about you should not have gotten pregnant if you can’t support a baby.

I don't know if this belongs in money or politics.

Having a baby thrusts young women into poverty. Honestly she would be so much better off financially if she had not gotten pregnant or if she had not stayed pregnant.

I do wonder where the support is from the Right to Life movement, for this young woman. Can't they help provide daycare for her so she can work?
