I'm not wasting stomach real estate on a relish tray.

My Scandinavian midwestern family did them with summer sausage, cheese ball, pickled things and deviled eggs

I grew up having a relish tray at every big dinner but we were Italian so we called it antipasto! And we put cured meats on it too.

Maybe? I grew up in the south but my family was originally from New England, so it’s hard for me to discern origins of traditions sometimes.

I’ll check out the Southern Living feature.

Is that available in grocery stores, or homemade?

You can buy them, next to the pickled artichoke hearts. Or you can make them, which is really easy. This is the basic recipe I follow, sometimes I add other herbs/spices or use flavored olive oils or vinegars https://www.tasteofhome.com/recipes/pickled-mushrooms-with-garlic/

Ohhh...we also do pickled artichoke hearts (we buy those).

Thanks for the recipe- I think I’ll try those!

....and sometimes we have pickled carrots (my uncle likes to make these. His are sweet-and-sour). We are a relish tray family--we have special crystal and sterling silver relish trays/forks/etc.

I LOVE cornichons.

Relish tray is a big deal in our family.

My MIL loves olives, so we get a couple different varieties. The whole foods olive bar is good.

Also, we do some pickled peppers. The cherry peppers are nice.

I love cornichons! Also love deviled eggs and red/orange/yellow bell pepper slices.

Growing up we had a pretty boring relish tray- primarily celery and olives. Now that I host Thanksgiving most years I like to mix it up year to year. I haven’t nailed down everything for this year. Definites are Spanish almonds (oiled, salted) and a couple of olive varieties. No one but me likes cornichons, but maybe a different pickle?

Curious what others like on their relish trays.

We love a good relish tray! These are the year-in and year-out staples:

-olives (green w/pimento, Kalamata, nyon (dry cured type that are really good!), some other type of stuffed green olive)
-pickled onions
-cornichon
-midget sweet pickles
-pickled baby corn
-pickled baby carrots
-celery stuffed with blue cheese
-quartered marinated artichoke hearts
-cottage cheese (I know, but it is tradition)

The cottage cheese goes in the center in a bowl and all the other components radiate out from there.

I will probably also do some type of deviled eggs. I've seen some good recipes recently and I'll try out at least one.
