Also, Sinead OConnor basically always had the shaved head while famous, even before she openly struggled with mental health, so I'm not sure why you'd make that assumption.

I'd figure she's pretty bold/brave. Or maybe she's trying to show that she's different. Maybe she identifies with Emma Gonzales (Parkland survivor). Maybe she's bored. Maybe she's about to go through chemo.

I wouldn't really assume anything about her. But I certainly wouldn't think of it as a bad sign of anything.

In what way? I would think she’d have high self esteem in order to buck all the trends and go bald.

My sister shaved her head as a teen. She did it for the same reasons most teens do anything to their hair: she relished the shock value. She is pretty straight laced in general, but occasionally likes to throw out a curve ball with her hair.

My favorite part was one Sunday after church TWO different elderly women stopped her and said how jealous they were because they'd always wanted to shave it all off and they admired that she had the guts to do it.

She went to an Ivy, has a PhD, owns a house, has kids, etc etc etc.

This is so not a big deal. Now a face tattoo? That's something I'd be concerned about. Hair is not permanent, so style can come and go.

I would think they're badass. There's so much manmade value embedded in women's hair - I often wish I had the courage to shave my head.

It's just hair. It will grow back. I'd let my dd do it. Although "let" is kind of a weird word, because it's her body, and it isn't permanent.

I would assume she was inspired by this asskicker. Smart girl.

What is there to feel about it?

If there are other grounds for concern about your daughter's friend, then be concerned. But a shaved head, all by itself, with no other context or indicator about anything? Nope. It's just hair.

My kid rocks his bald head because he has alopecia. Most people don't know what it is and assume he has cancer or that he has chosen his look. Do you know this tween well enough to be sure they don't have alopecia? Even spotty (as opposed to all over baldness) caused by this autoimmune disorder might lead you to shave your head so you don't have the strange patchy hair look. If the tween you know is choosing the bald look-- I am all for it. Bald is BEAUTIFUL.

I am judging someone based on this post and it's not the tween.

I buzzed my hair down to a number 4 this past summer and it was awesome. And I'm nearly 50 (and beautiful and female, in case you wondered)

I would think their head would be cold. Otherwise, I wouldn't think too much about it. I'm assuming it is a girl?

I'm a boring 39 year old suburban mom and I dream of shaving my head. I wish I'd done it when I was a teen! And agree with PP, by itself, not a cause for worry.

By itself, I'd think it was fairly awesome.
