I’m a brown skin person and I had a fair skinned child who’s complexion matches my mother exactly. My MIL who is also brown said my child’s features and coloring were all from her. I really didn’t care.

The worst thing for me was that my son when he was born looked just like my father in law: it was horrible at first how gross it felt nursing my boy!!!!

My MIL does something similar in that she says that every thing my kids do or looks like is just exactly like DH or that side of the family. In five years I have yet to hear her say any part of them is like me. Even when my first son developed his eye color and it was the same as me. DH and MIL have a different color. She sat around with DH trying to figure out who from their side of the family has that eye color that it could have come from. Pretty ridiculous in my opinion but I just rolled my eyes. That's about all that is needed for those type of comments.

I look just like my grandmother! At birth my son looked just like me. Now I think he looks like my husband and father as a teen.

But when he was 5 he looked just like my mother in law.

It doesn’t matter. The baby looks how s/he looks. MIL sees what she sees, and she’s proud to see a resemblance. At least she cares.

In any case, babies tend to go through phases where they resemble different sides of the family at different times.

If it really bothers you that much, simply say, "Mary, the baby looks like me and my side of the family, too. I had a little something to do with it, after all!" In a lighthearted tone and with some humor.

You are looking for grievances. Both my kids look like my MIL, especially my daughter. This doesn’t threaten me as a mother at all.

My first child looks very much like me. When she was a baby my in laws spent a lot of time saying she looked like various relatives while blatantly ignoring the fact that she looked just like me. People are weird. They don't do that anymore thank god.

I'd imagine this will simmer down as the baby gets older. But I'd be super annoyed too!

That would bother me too, because it's just graceless and insensitive of your MIL. If it's any consolation, if a grandma behaved that way in front of me, I would think she was crazy.

I think it’s sweet and certainly less awful that your MIL complaining that the baby looks nothing like her.

I gave birth to my second baby 10 months ago and my MIL is still bragging that the baby looks *JUST* like her ALL. THE. TIME. It's really rubbing me the wrong way, and I can't explain why. It's like I don't exist or something, or my family and my genes don't matter. She just spent the weekend at a family even showing everyone a baby picture of herself along with a picture of my baby. Why is this bothering me so much???!
