I’m a female and incapable of smiling at a guy like this (sad) so if I did that, it would mean that I liked your appearance and would like to get to know you.

I get this from men in DC, I respond with a smile and go on with my life but I would talk to them if they approached me.

These comments are generally correct. You will never see these women again and they have zero interest in you. But if you’re getting a longer than normal stare with a hair touch and a glance back, hey, go for it. Other than that, good luck finding a girlfriend, bro.

(P.S. Men are always telling women to smile, and then this man comes along and assumes that every smile means a woman wants him? No wonder many of us women aren't smiling as we go about about our daily business. We don't want to fend off idiots who think everything in the world is about them.)

Women are not expected or required to keep their eyes averted from every man other than their husband or prospective mate. They are allowed to smile at anyone or at nothing, without it having any implication about a random man who might have caught sight of it.

It probably means she is visiting from elsewhere. Here in the Midwest I smile and say hi to everyone. It means I am not a bitch around here...everyone does it.

I was in DC for work last week and counted 25 people who went by before an obvious Midwesterner smiled back, Fanny pack grandma sort. I stopped bothering.

It means nothing. A lot of the time I smile at everyone. It’s the opposite of resting bitch face.

It mean nothing. I smile at most people. I'm interested in my husband. Full stop. Not you. I'm just friendly.

For some reason we made contact and I’m being polite instead of rude. It doesn’t mean I want anything more to do with you, and I’d probably be creeped out if you pursued it further.

No. It means she is friendly and made eye contact. It doesn’t mean she’s into you any more than the receptionist at your office saying “good morning” meand she’s into you.

I'm a guy. Every once in a while on the sidewalks of DC a woman I am passing will flash an extremely brief smile and eye glance -- like one-half second or less. Does this mean she's interested in me? I expect if she wasn't interested at all she would not look or smile at all. Thank you for your comments.
