Hello. I’m looking to apply to College Park Academy for my child next year. Does anyone have experiences they’d like to share? I’d really love to hear from recent experiences. Thank you.

Both of my kids attend CPA: one middle and one high school. The students need to be self-disciplined, the principals are helpful and communicate alot, the teachers are available. The blended learning is mainly for electives like Spanish and the like.

My son has attended CPA for the last 2.5 years. He’s doing well in his classes and currently taking geometry on the high school side. Though it’s a decent school it seems to still be working on its educational model. Also since entrance to CPA is based on chance (lottery) not merit I think any kid can thrive there IF....

- They work well on their own.
- Their parents look over their progress regularly. At a minimum, check their progress each week.
- If your kid is an exceptional learner (above or below grade level) consider additional resources to help. Take advantage of the tutoring resources available. And/or extracurricular activities and clubs to flesh out their school experience.

I'm the teacher from the other thread. My niece was at Glenarden Woods last year. I was constantly impressed by the level of work she did even way back in the earlier grades. I personally didn't want her to give up her TAG option to come to us. CPA is leaps and bounds for some kids who are coming from schools that aren't very demanding. I don't think that would've been the case for her. I also think she would've been bored. She wants to be in a lot of programs and craves variety. We're a little short on that.

DD went there for middle school. While it was better than the local alternative, it was not a great experience. Basically, she survived. Now that she is at a different high school she is so happy and thriving. All of the kids in the top MS cohort transferred out for high school.

A teacher just posted their thoughts about the school in the Charter Lottery thread.

My son is a sixth grader and finding lots of success at CPA. The first few weeks were shaky for 2 reasons- first, the anxiety related to the MS transition in general; secondly, the transition to the online platform. My son is a very diligent, organized student and was super stressed about being able to see his grades every day. We had to do some work around the fact that grades fluctuate and it wasn't necessary to panic daily if he was doing everything required to the best of his ability. My concern was that the blended learning approach wouldn't allow for student to student engagement, but from what I can tell there are plenty of opportunities to collaborate with peers in class.

I have been impressed with the consistent communication regarding events and important information. I think there is a good variety of extra-curricular activities as well. The parent body seems engaged and helpful for new families.

I have heard a lot of negative reviews of CPA but I was wondering if anyone has had a positive experience.
