Subject: Ohio State - what are we missing?

I was the car pulled over.
When I visited Columbus people would yell at me in the parking lot for the grocery store - and not in a funny manner - but really seriously that I should go back to Michigan.
It is a very low class feel for The flagship state school.

Ahem. I'm sure you meant THE Ohio State.
Have a couple of friends with kids there, they love it. We did a brief self-tour while on a big loop through the Midwest. Wow - Student Union clearly shows the $$ pouring back in from athletics. Agree that the campus is quite nice. Made a joke at the tour station about visiting their rival school and hoo-boy! about 8 people in earshot visibly bristled. The overall athletic, hyper-sports-competitive vibe did not fit my kid.
Ultimately, when your kid can get into your in-state public land-grant university, and that university is higher ranked than the surrounding states' land-grant universities, why would you pay more money to go to a lower ranked school? It may be worth looking at them if you think you can get significant merit aid, or they have a unique specialty program, but otherwise you have a better value closer to home.

All they care about is sports. Not graduation rates or integrity. Do you know how many rapes are committed by the athletes there? Look no further than their football program where they kept a known wife beater on staff for so long. Read what happened under Urban Meyer's tenure at Florida. Crazy. He kept a high powered law firm on speed dial. Maybe it's okay to send boys to Ohio State but certainly you should second guess sending a girl there. Not a school of quality people and the school absolutely will value sports and winning over academic integrity or integrity in general.

I went there. Originally from Ohio. I really liked it. It is a huge school. You need good exec function skills to make it through in 4 years. You also need to work on finding your niche. No one would have noticed or cared if I had skipped every class.
For me, it was a great choice. But it certainly isn’t for everyone.

In terms of selectivity is probably easier for OOS kids to get into than Wisconsin and Michigan, but harder than other Big 10 schools like Indiana, Penn State, and Michigan State. As a result, it doesn’t have quite the niche those other schools have. It’s also huge, and it’s size is a turn-off for a lot of kids. But if your DD likes it, that’s all that should matter. It’s definitely a solid school.
