It’s pathetic the excuses people will make to justify wasting energy. And at the end, it always comes down to “ because I like it “.

The lamest excuse in this thread was saying it was “for safety”. Yeah. Putting light UP in trees, pointing up, to show the top branches off, is making your home safer. What a dumbass.

It's not a waste if it's for a purpose, which is (a) enhancing one's enjoyment of life by having a nice scene outside and (b) enhancing security.

Moreover, by your apparent standards, lighting up photos or artwork is also a "waste".

All of that said, outdoor lighting is moving to LEDs, probably faster than indoor, so energy consumption is significantly reduced from before. Combine that with timers/switches and it's not a huge waste.

We have landscape lighting, OP. It really does make the yard look beautiful. Solar lights are a waste of time and money. Also, we live out in the country. I am surrounded by wildlife. I promise you that unless you are lighting up a football field, animals don't care about your landscape lighting. It's no brighter than the light from a moon.

Agree to not waste money on solar lights. We followed this tutorial and did it ourselves.

Since most of the up lighting will be of trees-solar is almost always a poor choice as it gets shaded out. I work with amazing lighting designers and yes-it really makes the landscape pop. The best lighting highlights the landscape features-not blast it with illumination. Solar lighting-so far-is probably not going to do what you imagine. I have used dolor where I’m just looking to light a path. Plenty of options for that

Look into a lighting contractor, who can really make things "pop". Yes, probably will be expensive, and they will be able to trench power from near the house or inside if necessary.

We recently landscaped our yard and think some lighting or uplighting would really make it pop.
Reviews are so mixed online. Does anyone have any great (not ugly) solar lights they use?
I don't know how else to light the back yard along the fences since there is no outlet. I looked at the types that look like rocks but reviews are not great.
