There's a continuum - sometimes players and coaches will align positions to the kids strengths - best sticks play attack, best/fastest athletes play middie, biggest/slowest kids play defense, goalies... well they are just special. These attributes may change over time, positional training gets more focused in middle and high school but along the way kids should be able to move into different positions provided they've been working on all skills e.g. stickwork, dodging, etc.

We found it depends on coaches. Unfortunately at the younger ages, many are dads and don't switch it up so all kids try all positions. As a result our DS has always played D until high school when a coach put him as LSM and he switched to mostly that. We didn't start what we'd consider real club lax until late and by then kids were set in their positions. They also seemed to put short kids from short parents on attack and taller kids with taller parents on D. It takes a certain personality to handle the pressures of goalie.

Is it typical for boys to change positions when they're older or get to high school, or do they tend to play same position since starting club in 3rd or 4th - or earlier?
