In my mind, this is part of creating a village. Maybe someday I'll need a favor, maybe someday you will. Making everything gift for gift seems to diminish that in my mind, making it more transactional. (Or course if it was a random person on an email list, it may be transactional, but for a friend, I definitely don't expect a gift back. And some of those random people on email lists become friends anyway).
This is such a nice idea, the photo I mean. But the handwritten thank you is definitely enough and appreciated. I gave away a lot of nice clothes to a friend of a friend and got a wonderful handwritten thank you note.
