Your husband is being ridiculous, as you seem to know. He seriously won't let her dress up as something completely innocuous and go get some candy from your neighbors? What a dick.

I'd just do it anyway. Screw him.

Take your child trick or treating at a shopping mall. There will be much less "fright" stuff, and your child still gets to participate in a little bit of the fun. There is zero rational reason to not let your kid do something like this.

Is there a mosque or youth center that does a party that evening?

How young is she?

Could she put on whatever princess dress/Doc Mc Stuffins costume/puppydog pajamas/traditional muslim dress that she has, and you take her to grandma's house to show off her outfit and get candy or make cookies? You could present it to her as we don't want to focus on scaring people with the dead, we are going to celebrate with/honor the living?

Instead of carving pumpkins, could you get a couple of pie pumpkins and try to make a pumpkin pie or pumpkin bread from scratch and roast pumpkin seeds?

Would your husband object to modifying the American traditions like that?

The churches that object to Halloween do stuff like this for their fall festivals and alternative Halloween events.

Tell him to get over it. It's just a good bit of fun. Pretty sure Allah has more important things to do that condemn little children for asking for candy.

OP I grew up Muslim and trick or treating. So did all my other Muslim friend growing up. You can dress up as something completely benign and that has nothing to do with "horror" type stuff, and I don't see the conflict. Your DH sounds like he's being over the top stubborn and making your child pay for his stubbornness by being left out.

Since Halloween is associated with invoking dead spirits, as per its pagan roots, it is in direct opposition to Christian notion of "rest on peace". In Christianity, once the dead have passed on they are to rest in peace with God or go to hell but we are not to invoke them through imagery, rituals, etc.

Some churches do youth festivals on Halloween night. Would that be okay for your husband?

My neighbors who were very conservative religious compromised by sending their kids out dressing like angels and handed put candy with a Bible verse attached.

Maybe that would be a compromise?

Help! DH is a bit religious right and does not support trick or treating - kids going out to do it or handing out candy. Does anyone know of any festive alternatives in NW DC or MoCo? My little girl is sad....
