I think the first question to ask is how resourceful your kid could be in a hurricane evacuation. If your kid wouldn't be good and aggressive about getting transportation out, nothing else anyone here could say about Tulane or the University of Miami matters.

I went to Tulane and absolutely loved it. I was not in a sorority nor were most of my friends. I had a solid A- average in high school, a few AP classes. I did quite well in the SAT. I was quiet and not a joiner in high school, so my extracurricular weren’t all that impressive. I really found myself at Tulane. Classes were great, friendships were great, living in New Orleans was great.
Tulane draws students from all 50 states, has lots of international students, has an amazing JYA program. Sports are present on campus but not at all dominant which makes it much different than many Southern schools. I took amazing music classes, science classes, English classes. Yes, the school has a professional bent. I went to law school. Lots of friends did the same. Lots went to med school. But lots also went to the Peace Corps!
Tulane is diverse, nurturing, and exciting. I look back on my college years and wish I could go back!

Sorry about the trolls who keep posting about drinking and Greek life. They obviously have no experience with the school or any college. Tell us more about your DD. Tulane pulls from all over the country. There are lots of students from the NE and west coast. So it does not have a feel of a southern school. Also it’s in a city not a small college town. The Greek life is pretty restricted because the houses are in a residential area and their parties have to end at 12. In addition, Greek life tends to be less important in school that are located in cities because there is a lot to do outside of school.

Subject: What kind of kid does well at Tulane?
We know quite a few kids that attend and they all seem to have had great test scores but apart from that were not strong applicants to top 25 colleges. Tulane gave them all generous merit aid presumably to buy their scores for ranking purposes. These were smart, nice kids but not serious students by any stretch of the imagination. The school is also pretty Greek and has one of the highest percentages of Jewish students in the country.

We have good friends whose son attended Tulane. He transferred out after freshman year - could not find the right balance between the party scene and school scene.
Lots of rich white kids from the northeast who could not get into any of their top choices.

I imagine Tulane is big enough that there is a niche for everyone. Yes, there will be plenty of students drinking but there should also be others who aren't into the drinking scene.
The school seems to have a pre-professional bent and most of the Tulane grads I've met, including those who were classmates in high school, have generally gone into the business world or law or medicine. But, as mentioned, the school is big enough that there's a niche for everyone.
