I make a lot of money and just can't see myself spending $100,000 on a car. But, I will spend $35-40,000 on a used Mercedes coming off a 3 year lease with only 20,000 miles. I get it for about 60% of the original price. So I drive a nice luxury car without the luxury price.

If you look at cars now, they have come a long way from cars with back-up cameras. DH just bought a $65k car because he has a ridiculous daily commute and it has features like auto drive in traffic (it slows down and speeds up, brakes for you if someone brakes fast), and sensors all around so you always know if there’s someone in your blind spot, or if a kid runs out into the street when you’re backing up, thinks like that. ..
Relying on auto drive is a bad idea. Sounds like he wants the car to drive for him. That's dangerous. He should take the train!

If you look at cars now, they have come a long way from cars with back-up cameras. I don’t luxury either but my dads bmw surely is a nicer softer ride than my inlaws Honda. Worth it? Dunno. I’m sticking to cars I can afford but that are comfortable and don’t cause me back problems.

I don't care about the brand name or anything, but I like the features I can get on a higher-end car that I can't get on lower-end cars. For instance, I still had a kid in preschool when I bought my current car, and having a 360 camera so I could see absolutely everything around me and make sure there were no small children hiding in a blind spot made me a lot more comfortable navigating the parking lot (I know this feature is more common now, but when I bought my car only a couple of models had it).

I don’t think it’s strictly income issue. I still drive 2004 Honda with income level higher than that. I like my Honda as is.

I make $280 a year (HHI $400) and wouldn't do it, because luxury cars don't matter to me. But some people really love cars, or spend a lot of time in their cars, or really value name brands or cachet. As long as they're not spending my money, more power to them.

Why would someone buy a 70-150k car when a 35k car gets you around just fine? Seems like a waste to me. I have a friend who just bought a Mercedes and I don't think k I could bring myself to do it. I know everyone's values are different but if I got a raise, I would go on vacation and save some.
