We have had experience at 4 schools between all of our children and I can say we feel NCS is a very nice school. Our daughter is happy there and she has many friends and genuinely likes all of her classmates. They are supportive of one another.

PP, our experience has been just the opposite. Our DD started at NCS last year and she was warmly welcomed. She has great friends at the school, and the teachers have been supportive and caring. Is it academically rigorous? Absolutely, but we knew that going in.

Not a nice school.

PP, why don't you visit and talk to people at the school if you're interested? Briefly: very bright, driven, articulate, with a twist of something special that contributes to the diversity of the school.

It's important to shadow and visit and get a feel for the school. Each private school in the area has its own culture. What works for one kid may not work for another. My friends' daughters at NCS love it but they do say that it is a very competitive environment.

6th grade is an expansion year, too - they add one more Lower School class in that grade. So 4th, 6th, 7th and 9th.

NP. I didn’t realize that it is so low. My DD was admitted to NCS in 9th for this school year. She really like the warm and welcome environment but ultimately chose another Big 3.

You must be new to private schools. High school is when all private schools are the most competitive, because there are a lot of parents in the DC area who think like you.

Even with top grades, ECs, and excellent teacher recommendations, there’s no guarantee your child will be admitted at high school. For the Cathedral schools (NCS/STA) and Sidwell, admissions rates for 9th are below 10%...and dropping.

I think the other years are not really considered admission years but just sort of replacement / maintenance of the overall class size. If 3 or 4 leave that year they will bring in a couple to replace, maybe.

I suspect 9th is the toughest as there are so many others trying to get in then too.
