Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the de facto leader of Saudi Arabia who has a close relationship with Trump and Kushner, has shown himself to be reckless and willing to take provocative actions. Trump's constant berating of the media as the "enemy of the people" may have been seen as a green light. Certainly the US has shown little to no concern about the mass killing Saudi Arabia is conducting in Yemen so the US is unlikely to care about a single Saudi journalist.

That's complete bollocks. When Al-Saud wants to eliminate someone, they are not at all concerned about the green light from the U.S. And Khashoggi, of all people, would be least likely to merit the attention.

Khashoggi has been working for the regime since his early twenties, toeing the line of loyalty to the royals and being a good little boy. It was only recently that he became critical of MBS, and bad things happened. It's not that Khashoggi was the voice of freedom; for instance, he applauded the beheading of Sheikh Nimr, the spiritual leader of the Saudi Shia Muslims. It's that he showed disloyalty after eating off the regime for all these years, plus got tangled in the rivalries between different princes. Run with the dogs, get fleas.

Plus you KNOW Trump will not call Saudi Arabia out on this or express his condolences about the journalist.

Trump has villified journalists for the past few years and has even incited his followers to violence against them at his rallies. So yes, every time a journalist is murdered or killed (which happens often), it makes me angry at Trump for his dangerous rhetoric, even if he isn't "at fault" for that particular journalist's death. F*ck him.

Gotta hate people who Blame the VICTIM. Ok Kav I see you.

Chill. It was an honest question. As a journalist Khashoggi can't have been unaware of threats against him, which is why it is curious he would do this.

Well Trump embraces these people. We need to protect our journalists. Trump hangs out with a sick thuggish crowd.

So very sad. The Post had posted a compelling "empty" article under his byline to express their worry at no word from him. The new Saudi Prince sounds like another Putinlike oligarch. RIP. Journalists are true heroes.

The DC establishment has coddled the Saudis for a long time. Will they continue to do so?

This is awful. But I'm sure Trump will back the Saudi line that he's "missing." And then throw in a jab at the fake news Washington Post and call it a day.
