I'm generally not opposed to people hiring people to come to their house, eg cleaners or a piano teacher. In fact, having a gymnastics teacher come to your house can be cheaper than having to hire a babysitter to take your kids to the place, if you work.

However, I think this whole 'do everything in your house' trend -- in-house hair salons, movie theaters, gyms -- is really damaging to social coherence. In theory, people of all colors and ages and religions and political leanings and income levels should be mixing in public spaces and even in for-profit establishments. It's a way for kids of different backgrounds to get to know each other. (Yeah I know that idealized mixing doesn't really happen much in upscale Bethesda but it's better than nothing.) Paying people to come to your house all the time just adds to the polarization of our society.

AND one of the fathers retired at 35 and is around all the time. Very involved.

I am actually seeing this with SAH parents. SAH and affluent parents.

Are the kids learning and enjoying? I can see some benefits...less travel time, more individual attention, less exposure to germs during flu season, less tiring, less intimidating for a shy child.

This is an excellent idea.

My SIL does it for her older kids. Most tutoring or classes happen in her house. She is a SAHM but feels that it is easier for her kids not to travel after a long day at school. I guess whatever works.

I’m sure those parents would admit they are anxious AF.

My sister did this with her neighbor for their kids. It's actually the same price as a group class. More attention, and they save over an hour in not drinking the kids to class

One way to spread the wealth. Why not? Also please employ public school teachers during summer break. Many can do with the extra cash.

Hmmm...if these parents don't have time but have the money to spare, why not?

As long as the kids enjoy it, I have no problem that they are providing employment opportunity to other people.

If they can afford it, why not?

I know two families who do this. Aside from having a private taekwondo class (3 kids in the studio) for their preschool kids, they also have private gymnastics coaches and music teachers come to their homes. These kids are between 3 and 4.

Please agree that this is insane!
