I went to all four operas in Wagner's Ring Cycle in 2016 (Cycle II) and saw plenty of people in tuxedos and formal gowns at the Kennedy Center.

DH wore nice suits and I wore semi-formal gowns (but I was 8 months pregnant at the time, so options were limited.)

You'll see people in a wide range of attire. Keep it classy!

Yes! Too many folks settle for drab, sturdy or serviceable rather than fab! Wear it!

I'm saying this as a season ticket holder for many years. Go ahead and wear a tux, if you'd like, but you'll feel overdressed. A nice formal suit is plenty formal for a gentleman. My DH has a tuxedo, and is disappointed that the Washington Opera, even opening night, is not the occasion for it. Save it for the Opera Gala.
