I'm saying this as a season ticket holder for many years. Go ahead and wear a tux, if you'd like, but you'll feel overdressed. A nice formal suit is plenty formal for a gentleman. My DH has a tuxedo, and is disappointed that the Washington Opera, even opening night, is not the occasion for it. Save it for the Opera Gala.
