Maybe this is why Wilson does not have NMSF? Students are not given enough opportunities for advanced coursework in middle school?

My DS is at Deal - currently in 7th grade. Let's pretend that PARCC is a test that effectively assesses a student's mastery of content. My DS got a low 5 on both ELA and math in 6th grade. A 5 on PARCC is exceeding expectations of learning standards.

For ELA, with a low 5, 26% of the class scored higher.
For Math with a low 5, 20% of the class scored higher.

The school is clearly doing something to get over 20% of the student body to exceed learning expectations -even without a ton of homework.

For Grades, my child was not on Principal's Honor Roll.

DCPS does not provide support for gifted kids. Of any race, color, religion, economic background, etc.

No, they do not. And there are probably students who are not getting straight As who are gifted too. But that is a topic for a different thread.

It's just sixth grade, not a competition, and there are 500 kids in the grade. Do you really think hundreds of kids should be incapable of learning the material? Get over it.

Well, thankfully there isn't a lot of homework. Just enough. But I know some objectively smart kids who really struggled to get As and learned a lot in their time there. So maybe you are just jaded or are you a genius?

Deal has never been known as a school with a heavy homework load or to be particularly challenging (the IB Middle Year program isn't either).

A few classes are known to be more challenging than others (Geometry, Alg 2, Chinese).

In 6th when they post the Principal's Honor roll (all As), the list is about 20-25% of the class, so about 80% does not get all As. The list shrinks as time goes on, but lost of kids go all in for grades in 7th if they plan to apply to high schools, so there sometimes is a bump of good grades that year.

Get your kid in some activities and boost those EC's. He's doing great!

I was wondering the same thing. I wonder if and when they will be challenged.

Ignore the previous poster. Sitting on the couch and staring into space or a screen is what kids that age do once they come home from their activities. Deal is overwhelming and they need a break.

Why does DC sit on the couch a lot? There are so many sports and activities DC can participate.

What grades would an average student get at Deal? My DC is getting lots of A/A-s and does not even seem to work that hard. Not a lot of homework either. DC comes home and seems to sit on the couch a lot, not doing much. It makes me wonder....
