DD loves science.

9: Bio Honors
10: Chem Honors
11: AP Physics 1
11 APES
12: Probably AP Physics 2 or C, tbd
12: Either AP BIO, AP Chem, or Geosystems

I wish FCPS would create a matrix which showed which schools offered which courses. I find the course selection book very confusing.

My just graduated DS was at an IB school and is planning on Arts & Sciences Economics (as opposed to Economics in the Business school.)

He took:

Biology Honors
IB Chemistry SL
IB Biology SL
IB Environmental SL

The other, currently in 8th grade and very into biological and environmental science had talked about...

9th: Intensified Biology
10th: intensified Chemistry
11th: AP Biology (or AP Physics if it's really essential to do physics in HS) + Animal Science
12th: AP Environmental Science + Animal Science

If a student is planning on a STEM major in college, it is essential to take physics in HS as colleges want to see all 3 major sciences on the transcript.

That's what I was figuring. I'm anticipating an argument about that in 11th-12th

If your kid drags his/her feet about wanting to take physics HS but insists that they want to major in a field that requires physics then it's time to sit down with them and show them the courses that they will need to take and pass in college.

My own kid was the one who insisted on taking physics in HS, that was certainly not my idea and not something that I would have insisted on him taking. It was a legitimately difficult class.

So do kids routinely double up on AP science classes in 11th-12th? At our school you have to do honors chem/honor bio before taking the AP class. So after honor bio (9th), honors chem (10th), AP physics (11th), you'd have to choose either AP Bio or AP Chem or many prefer AP Environmental Science. If it's "important" to do AP Chem AND AP Bio then you are taking those together plus AP Calculus plus other AP classes that have been deemed important in the humanities. No wonder kids are so stressed out.

Just graduated Senior took Int. Bio, Int. Chem, AP Env Sci and then AP Physics. Current Freshman is starting off the same, but may do something different Jr./Sr. year as he doesn't have the same interests. Definitely four years though.

How many science courses will your kid take throughout HS and which courses are they taking?
