We live in Colonial Village and I drive my child. The Deal bus pick up is really early and frankly my still 10 year old doesn't need to be on that bus (I have older kids who did take it but not at Deal now). So I drive.

I wouldn’t put a ten yr old on the bus either.

Doesn't your 10 yo need to be turning 11 in the next 4 days to be enrolled in 6th grade?

I should add that if I don't drive my child then public transport would either be metro from Silver Spring (after a bus to it) or 2-3 buses depending on the time of day. Again, not for a 10 year old.

When I need to drive my kid, I pull into a parking spot on a side street and my child walks. There are lots of parking spots a block away that allow you to drive safely and your child to exit the car, cross the street and walk in a safe manner.

Traffic is very tough in that neighborhood at that hour, and if x cars stopped randomly to drop off students — no, parents in a rush typically don’t pull to the side — it would be even worse, plus dangerous.

There was a thread on this board last spring report8ng that a child had been hit when his parent dropped him off at an intersection. Not sure if this actually happened. But sounds chaos inducing/potentially dangerous to me.

Anyway, Ms. Neal and some of the APs are outside directing circulation after school. So they are personally invested in safety.

No matter where you live, if you're driving it's best to drop off 3-4 blocks away and let your kid walk the rest.

Why...why...why on earth would you even attempt to drive in there in the mornings?? Unless your child is injured and can't walk - make them walk to school/ take the bus or drop them a few blocks off. Just don't contribute!

I know not everybody has this option but this is why my kid takes the bus everyday.

The crossing guard has his shit together, they need someone else like him in the parking lot to deal with these jerks. I had to drop off for the early trip this week and I was really impressed by him as I was leaving.

Who are these self entitled parents who think it is A OK to pull a U-turn in front of Deal instead of proceeding forward to the circle to turn around? There are hundreds of kids coming from all directions and these a-holes can't spend two minutes driving forward? Instead they need to do a 3 point U turn directly in front of the school endangering kids and blocking traffic. Deal finally put up cones to try to stop them. Yesterday morning I watched a father drop off his kids and immediately do a U-turn in his gigantic truck. While doing his 3rd back up maneuver he failed to see the child who had exited another car trying to get to school and almost took the kid out. He then knocked over two cones and actually got one stuck under his car. He had to exit the vehicle to get it out from underneath! Definitely less safe and more time then just proceeding to the circle turn around.

Yes, I have talked to the school about this. I would hope ALL parents would start to just drive forward, turn around in the circle and come right back out.
