NP: Villanova is school with a different feel than big state universities; no one is suggesting they look down on anyone--nor that they are looked down upon. In this list, if you were coming from Northern Virginia, UVA and UNC-Chapel Hill would likely be slightly harder to get into, UMD and Illinois roughly the same. Penn State and Clemson easier. And the out-of-state tuition at the public schools is a lot, so if you didn't like UVA and/or weren't accepted, Villanova would probably end up costing just as much as the rest--with the exception of Penn State which has comparatively reasonable out-of-state tuition, but doesn't have the same academic selectivity and is much larger.

UVA- 29- 33
Villanova 30- 33

Both are great schools, with different strengths and different missions. Plenty of smart kids at each.

Villanova is certainly getting more selective. Here's the Class of 2022 First-Year Admitted Profile:
Acceptance Rate 28.9%
GPA (middle 50%): 4.10-4.48 on a weighted 4.0 scale
SAT (middle 50%): 1380-1490
ACT (middle 50%): 31-34

If you look at the lists of “peer institutions” for each, they are very different. Villanova tends to overlap with other Catholic schools (BC, Holy Cross, Providence, Loyola) and schools in PA.

I am not a UVA booster (lots here on DCUM), but Villanova is not in the same league. It's a tier below.
