Audubon is awesome especially for younger kids - but sign up for membership soon (I think the deadline is early December) so you get access to priority registration. For early elementary, the camps literally sell out within minutes.

We loved Audubon - DS went when he was 4.5 and this past summer at 5.5. It's a great and well-run program.

My 4 year old did Audubon last summer and absolutely loved it. He is on the reserved side and didn't know anyone in camp. We live in downtown DC so it is a complete pain to get there but we plan to sign up for another session this summer.

My tween still does the Croyden camps for older kids--loves them! He's also done a couple at Locust Grove, and those were good too.

OP its a bit further but definitely worth it - Glen Echo Park. They have nature camps as well as other camps, all of which we've experienced as wonderful.

Audubon is excellent. Well-run with great teachers and beautiful campus. My kids have loved every minute.

Washington Waldorf School has a small, warm camp that (like its preschool program) is almost entirely nature based.

We didn't do Meadowside because the 5 yo were grouped with the 3 yo, but we plan on it this coming summer when DS is 6.

Talk to me about the summer camps at the nature centers. We live in North Bethesda, so Meadowside, Croydon Creek, Locust Grove, and possibly Brookside are the ones I'd consider. This would be for a 5 year old boy going into Kindergarten. HE's used to preschool camps and a little bit shy. So something small and with hands-on and attentive counselors.
