Hook - something that makes you a more attractive candidate and enhances admissions chances because it fills a schools needs.
Usually means recruitable athlete (they must fill teams and some care about fielding winning teams), national academic competition wins etc

They do excellent talks around the country. Bring your child. Even if their schools are not for you/your child, their approach to the whole college search is very healthy.

Some colleges may try to "protect their yield" by rejecting highly qualified candidates whom they think will not ultimately enroll --- instead preferring to accept students more likely to choose their school because it's the student's best/first choice.

Importance of yield -low yield means most accepted candidates picked a different school, normally a better school (not all the time if fit of program is what u r after than school ranking)

Ok my oldest is just getting into the stage where I need to learn a few things...I've figured out some of them (please correct me if I'm wrong)
URM=underrepresented minority
SLAC=small liberal arts college
CTCL=colleges that change lives (small...colleges?)
I dont' know:
ORM
what the importance of the yeild is...
and a bunch of other abbreviations. If you could just point me to a link, (or post a list here) I'd appreciate it!
