For one of my jobs, I’m a dramaturg. Both times that job has been portrayed on TV (Law & Order, Smash) the character has been a villain who wants to be rich & famous. In real life, I’m a collaborator who just wants to be a big drama nerd for a living.

Slightly different but similar - I worked for a guy who had formerly worked as a CPA for the FBI. I was SHOCKED to find out he just ... did accounting stuff. Never chased anyone, no gun, no intrigue. I was completely naive to what it meant to be in the FBI.

I’m a prosecutor, so it varies. SVU is pretty accurate in its portrayal of prosecutors. The biggest misconception I see on TV is that witnesses and victims are very respectful toward prosecutors and are generally thankful and cooperative with us. None of that is true. I was treated with more respect when I waited tables.

Research scientist here. Nope, not even close. The small amount of stuff in my subfield is laughably wrong.

I used to be a teacher in a struggling district. The Wire got it very right.

Is your job ever featured on movies/tv and do they get it right? I'm a lawyer and no, they do not get it right at all. It's far less glamorous and I don't spend all my time in court trying cases or making deep speeches. I just watched a CLE (continuing legal education) program in which they refreshed us on attorneys ethics rules by using examples of times on tv when the rules of ethics were not followed (spoiler alert: tv lawyers appear to follow no ethics rules whatsoever). It was pretty funny (for a CLE).
