All Catholic schools do.

Our catholic school does, for any volunteering where you are with children. It's not required if you're not with the kids, like if you're helping with making copies and such.

I think this is the current norm. I'd be more surprised if anyone said their school doesn't require a background check in order to volunteer with the kids. For that matter my daughter's preschool required a background check with fingerprinting and a four hour training on abuse prevention for any volunteer position, even just office work.

At both of the privates we attended, the schools ran internet searches on us as part of the admissions process, and later on they ran searches as part of development pitches. We found out about it after the fact. It felt invasive.

Why would someone running a google search on you feel invasive? It's not as if they're hiring a private investigator. They're not getting any information that's not also available to anyone who knows your name and has an internet connection.

No. The only context in which this would come up is if you want to volunteer at the school, in which case certain felonies (but not all) may disqualify you for that. But that is entirely optional and only required if you want to volunteer in the classroom at most schools--even if there is a volunteer requirement (as there is at ours) there are many ways to meet it that don't require an FBI/DOJ background check.

I can imagine there are schools that might do Google searches to find out more about particular parents (and that's very common for development everywhere). But that likely won't pull up convictions unless they are relatively high profile (and I'd be surprised to hear that they do it for every parent, although who knows).

Why is this distrubing? So you think kids whose parent committed a crime shouldnt be in private school?

I always assume that someone in an admissions office will run a cursory Google, Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn search on applicants' families.

No - questions about criminal records do not come up in the admissions process.
