That's the nature of employment laws. DC's minimum wage law applies to residents of MD and VA who work in DC.

Then it's.problematic. if it's too onerous on businesses, it will drive them to resettle in MD and VA. Probably not the federal or police/firefighter etc jobs their residents come into our city to do. More like the big box or start up etc that our DC citizenry are employed by (yes, we are also employed by govt.)..So in essence MD and VA residents would be double dipping. If Silverman were a really great politician, she would coordinate some kind of arrangement with the surrounding districts, as our email monies and fates are so intertwined. She would also be reasonable to a.scaled back version. To go it alone is DC taking a stand on a national social justice issue and getting that kind of "glory" but also economic suidice that doesn't actually put residents well being first. I think this one needs a "do-over".

You are probably uninformed about the Paid Family Leave law. It doesn't just apply to mothers who have have given birth. Fathers are also eligible. Do you think this will cut down on jobs for men in their 20s and 30s? More over, the law is not limited to maternity or paternity events. It also covers serious medical conditions affecting family members or serious medical conditions impacting the employee. If employers avoided child-bearing age women, they might end up with an inordinate amount of older employees who are more likely to face health issues.

You should vote republican PP in upcoming local elections. It definitely is a sliding scale here in DC bast on how far to the left our Dem leadership is. IMO most Republicans in DC would socially be democrats anywhere else. Most are fiscally conservative though - or at least don't consider tax payer money monopology money to throw at every pet project that they think only more, more, more money can be the answer to.

Yes. We need policies that support families,.DC families (MD and VA complicate things - and should be carefully considered) and also support the business that generate revenue and employ people. I don't think Silverman considers both sides of the equation. She is the type of liberal who doesn't think through natural consequences in her desires to throw around play-money. That doesn't mean a Bowser fan, as she seems far too cozy with those same businesses. Let's get some new faces on the council and consider voting republican if only to have alternate voices.

What is going on with the Mayor and Elissa Silverman? I can't really make out what the true issue is here.

All I know is
(1) I like Silverman on a lot of issues
(2) I was out walking around the alleys of U Street today and Silverman had a ton of canvassers out and about. Mostly african americans, many latinos.

I asked one of the canvassers what was up with Elissa and the mayor. They said they didn't know, but they were behind Elissa.
