My grandfather called me "girl". I thought it was hilarious and still do! He passed away a few years ago and I think of him fondly, although I am not sure he knew my real name. . .

I also think it’s very sweet that nanny calls your DD ladybug! I’m a nanny and she’s probably just doing it out of love. I call my charges by their names though.
My previous charges had their own nicknames that I eventually started using because MB would always say it. I also have a childhood nickname that my mom gave me because my sister couldn’t pronounce my name. My aunt introduced me to my previous MB so MB would call me that too and I wouldn’t mind. I say NBD as long as the children are okay with it too

I think it’s sweet. The only exception is if someone is purposefully calling a child by a different name that the child doesn’t like - like calling my son Jimmy when he goes by James. But grandpa calling him Buddy etc in a loving way is fine.

My father was a big nickname guy. It did make people feel special.

My dad, too. 30 years later, my childhood friends were still reminiscing (in a good way) about the nicknames he gave them.

No, my dad has nicknames for my kids that he uses just once in awhile and I know he says them with love. They like it because it means something special between them. My grandfather and I had nicknames for each other and that was very special. Stupid names but special.

I only bugs me for the people I don't like

Its sweet and well intended. I roll my eyes at some, but it's just a sign of affection. I have ridiculous nick names for my kids...I don't like when someone uses one of those, but sure, go use your own as long as it's not inappropriate or something.

My kid can reel off the nicknames that my mom calls her, and she loves it. If I use one of them, she says, "That's what grandma calls me!" I can't see why it would bother me--it's a sign of affection. Unless the kid doesn't like the nickname, this is just not an issue.

I love it--it means there are people in the child's life that know them intimately enough to have nicknames.

DS is 4.5, and thinks it is SO FUNNY that one friend calls him a nickname. He talks about it constantly--it makes him feel super special.

I should add my kids are 9 and 11 so they are regularly called by their name by their teachers, classmates, and friends. And the nicknames are a non-embarrassing. Relatives call out their nicknames during sports events and they don't mind. One family nickname for one of our kids is Bear- he was cute, could climb anything, feisty, and loved berries. One of his coaches heard his grandfather cheering for him and now calls him Bear too.

Bugs me sometimes but nothing I would complain about. DH and I spent hours choosing DS’s name and love it - and between “the baby” and various nicknames, I never get to hear his name!

When family and friends have specific nicknames for your children, does it bother you? Like Grandpa calls Larlo “Buck” and nanny calls Larla “Ladybug”?
