Impeachment has a lower bar than 25th Amendment. It only requires a majority in the House and 2/3's in the Senate. 25A requires 2/3's in both houses, plus the VP, plus the cabinet.

I despise Trump and think he’s a dangerously incompetent. That said, he’d a relatively contained danger. Better to have him ride out until 2020 and then have him gracefully decide to not pursue a second term - “to run his businesses”; “he accomplished everything he wanted to” - than impeachment. Our country is bitterly tribal and this will only worsen with impeachment. And the cultish base and right wing nuts only become more vicious and nutty.

It would feel good (feel great) to impeach him; it would not be good for us longer term. I do worry about civil war, especially with all of the gun-toting nuts who are part of the GOP now

Due to decades of partisan propaganda, they have plausible deniability with a segment of the population (super conservatives and the not paying attention). The minute Trump pinches Ivanka’s butt on camera or streaks across the White House lawn behind a KellyAnne talking head, it will happen.

The 25th Amendment has been seriously discussed since Trump was inaugurated. There were even many Republicans expressing concerns in very public conversations throughout 2017. Of course Rosenstein has thought about the matter, who in Washington hasn’t?

Trump’s mental state was (and is) such a concern that it couldn’t wait for a hearing, instead it became a national security issue reigned in by the “adults in the room,” or the “deep state.”

However, that approach is becoming less effective, because literally we would not be surprised by any erratic, depraved, dangerous act Trump could commit. There is no check on his behavior.

The temper tantrums have been indulged without consequence, and Trump’s loyal base has been whipped into a lather of constant rage and defensiveness, to the point that even when they know Trump is wrong (nobody defends his tweeting, for example) they back him against their personal interests (the elderly against Medicare?, poor people demanding massive transfers through tax cuts to the rich).

Trump’s actions now are far more troubling than in 2017. His speeches are more incoherent, and his need to constantly make every discussion about the election suggests that he may not actually be able to understand or follow policy sufficiently to inform his base, or the public at large.

Senior level departures, investigations, a serious book in an investigative journalist style, and several tell-all books from different perspectives it seems that there is even more evidence and reason to have this conversation.

Of course the 25th amendment needs to be on the table — how could it not.

There’s narcissism, narcissistic personality disorder, and malignant narcissism. Helps to know the difference.

And, obviously, there is a huge range in the outcomes between different people.

However you classify Trump, he is appropriately described as “a danger to others.”
