I also find it valuable to keep one card that has no balance transfer fee. They don't have any special rates, but do not charge interest until the following statement's due date (credit union card--some charge interest immediately on balance transfers, so watch out for that). I occasionally use that card as a place to stick a balance for a couple of months at no cost, and then either pay it in full or do a balance transfer to a card with a promo running.

FWIW, AmEx offers several credit cards now in addition to charge cards (and has for some time--I've had one since at least 2001). You don't have to pay the credit cards in full each month the way you do the charge cards. Their rates are competitive with the MC and Visa cards we have.

And yes, as PP noted you do just have to watch that you aren't trying to do a balance transfer between cards at the same bank. The limits of the transfer should be spelled out in the offer.

Got it- we are good! Wonder what the max transfer is for Slate? I wasn’t able to find it online.

Be careful with AmEx. They have no fee for the transfer which is great but they don’t tell you that they have a max transfer amount until you’re approved for the card. You may need a second balance transfer card that charges a fee for the remaining balance.

Looking to transfer the balance of our one major CC (besides Amex which we obv pay monthly) high interest card onto a 0%. We applied for one that was recommended online but received a letter that we are out of their area. We have excellent credit so qualifying should not be a problem. Thank you!!!
