I mean, it’s only a penny to ME, but damn, they probably make a mint off of charging every Sprite that penny every day. I’m tempted to email them.

To tell them what? Buy it or don't, your choice.

Well, I wasn’t told about it. I only noticed it on the receipt. If a million people weren’t told about the penny and bought regardless, that would make McDonalds some hefty pocket change, wouldn’t it? Perhaps they should let people know about the upcharge.

And chocolate milk has more sugar and caffeine than the Sprite, so...

You substituted for the drink that comes with the meal. Agree they should have told you about the $0.01. Good for you for giving your child sugary soda as a reward for behaving well!

Well aren’t you perfect. It was only a matter of time before Judgy Mom showed up! PS: Milk and apple juice has as much sugar or more. Everything in moderation.

I bet it's just about data tracking for that store. They charge a penny so than can figure out how often it happens at the end of the month. Probably no way to note it except a charge.

McDonald's announced earlier this year that they are reformulating their chocolate milk to contain less sugar. Not sure if they've done that yet or not, but they're working on it.

Double check the receipt too. Inventory and sales systems might require a charge for every item, but are you certain the charge was included in the total, or that the meal itself wasn't reduced by a penny somewhere else on the receipt?

This is correct, they come with apple juice, milk or chocolate milk. I'm assuming the soft drink required an additional ($.01) cost.

Where were you? Some jurisdictions are passing legislation requiring kids meals to include only milk or water or something like that. I'm guessing you were in one of these horrible places, and the only way they could legally give you a soft drink is to charge you for it - a penny!

This is what the world is coming to.

Probably part of the new kids' healthier meals initiative--a small disincentive to buy sodas for children and reduce unhealthy meal options more generally. Cheeseburgers are no longer a standard option for happy meals either, have to pay extra for those too. I have no problem with that.
