So the safety ratings are misleading in the sense that they can only be used to compare to cars in the same class...i.e. a Camry is "super safe" compared to the Accord, Altima, Passat, etc not anything larger or heavier. A heavier car with a higher occupant seating position will generally almost always fare better in an accident.

The RAV4 appears to get IIHS Top Safety Pick but not TSP+. In a real-world scenario where not everyone on the road is in the same class of car as you the safer choice is still going to be the RAV4.

Prius V (the wagon version)—77,000 miles and has needed nothing more than one set of tires and standard maintenance. ‘12. I have a similar commute and fill it once or twice a month at most. Hate long drives in it, but it is the perfect second car for quick trips in and around town/the city and carries strollers, dogs, etc. easily because of the wagon style rear end. Bonus is that it is easy to park.

Same, miss my civic constantly. The next car we buy will absolutely be a Civic.

I LOVE my RAV but it doesn’t get the best gas mileage. Decent, but obviously not as good as a sedan. I’ve accepted this as its biggest flaw and will never go back because I just love it so much. I test drove every car in this class and the choice was easy.

Safety ratings are relative to their class (relative to sedans vs. SUV; they're in separate categories). Take them with a huge grain of salt.

Get the RAV4 if that's what you'd like. You're better off being higher in a collision.

I'm kind of dumbfounded why you have a Mercedes. It's no secret that those are shit cars.

We have a Forester and like it very much. No problems other than regular maintenance. It takes 2 car seats but be aware the middle seat doesn't accommodate most car seats. It would not be a great carpooling car until kids are older (but not too old, 3 adults is tight back there).

looking to downsize my mid-size (think Highlander) SUV. it is expensive to fix, expensive to fuel (takes a lot of premium gas) and is frankly not necessary. I do a quick drop off and pick up so kid is in the car for 10 mins a day, and the rest is my 9 mile commute in back to back 395 traffic.

considering something like a Camry or a Mini Countryman (used to have a cooper pre kids and loved it) or a Subaru--these because of the super safety ratings.

would like something that fits two car seats (one a large Clek, rear facing) and won't break my back lifting the kid into the Clek (it has sides so kids have a hard time getting in). something that won't cost a fortune to fix/maintain. something I can truly drive for a while.

(we have a second car, a huge family car, so really no need to fit 4 people into this one comfortably)

thoughts/recommendations? tia!
