It's like a Venn Diagram. Judaism is not a race. You can be Jewish and Black, Asian, whatever. You can be Sephardic and Ashkenazi ethnically, but not Jewish - in the sense that you don't believe in the religion. You can be both, or none. They can overlap but they're not one and the same.

wha? no. that's a load of 19th century crap. Ashkenazi and Sephardim are two totally separate ethnicities - yet somehow identical? Are all Irish people Catholic by race as well?

Religion isn’t a race, but there are Jewish ethnic groups. You can be religiously Jewish without being a member of one of those groups, but you can also be ethnically Jewish without believing in the religion.

Yes, there can be gene markers that show Ahkenazi Jewish ancestry but that's not true about JEWS in general. Judaism is a ritual religion -- anyone can join, anyone can leave -- you can't leave your race.

I’ve seen this misconception way too many times on this board.

Jews are a racial group. You don’t have to be ethnically Jewish to be Jewish, but Ashkenazi and Sephardic are ethnic identities. You can never practice Judaism and still be Jewish if you have that ethnic background.
