OP, have you considered moving out of the exurbs?

I routinely drive along 66 from Vienna Metro to DC, departing at 7 am, and the part inside the beltway is almost traffic-free. Assume normal highway speeds, or approximately 15 minutes from beltway to bridge. If Google Maps is giving you something different using 66, you must be catching traffic on your way to the highway or between the highway and your destination.

Remember, you need either a regular EZ pass or an EZ pass flex to drive on 66 now.

Use Waze and allow tolls.

If this is next week, traffic is notoriously bad the first week in September so leave early.

FWIW: I can get from ARL to downtown in 30 minutes if I leave by 7:30. I'm pretty sure you can get from Vienna to ARL between 7& 7:30...Good luck though. Kids in my morning commute would ruin my zen, audiobook, and coffee.

What express lanes are you talking about?

Outside the beltway, 66 has one HOV Lane. Yes, it will save you time, but not a ton. Hard to estimate. It’s not physically separate, just the left lane is reserved for HOV. From where you are starting, this is only Nutley to the beltway, which is one exit - won’t make a huge difference.

Inside the beltway, all of 66 is HOT (HOV or toll) during rush hour. There’s no express lanes vs regular, it’s all the same. The estimates you are seeing assume that you’ll either be a carpool or paying $$$ to use those same lanes.

Will you be on the beltway for part of it? That does have separate HOT lanes from the regular lanes.

Nope. I drive into to DC from Vienna on 66 at that time each morning, and there's no need for any "express" lanes. You are already HOV, so you can drive in the HOV lanes. And, honestly, at that time of day, once you get past the 495 interchange, traffic is fine.

I realize this is probably a dumb question but I went to the website and cannot figure it out. We will have to drive kids from VA in to DC during rush hour for a standing appointment. I can see on googlemaps that the drive could range from 45-75 minutes on 66 (from approximately Vienna Metro Station in to NW DC, departing at 7am). I cannot figure out if express lanes would help at all to shorten this because I cannot get any time estimates or click an "express lane" option on googlemaps....thanks
