My boyfriend had originally gotten one cat, then took in 2 kittens from the shelter that had been abused, then acquired a stray that kept hanging out at his apartment. I had a cat. When we got married, it was a 5 cat household.

But, whatever.

There really isn't much difference between 3 and 5, as long as you are on top of cleaning (fur everywhere!) Remember that adding a cat is likely a 15-20 year further commitment. (We are currently a no cat household - everyone passed over the rainbow bridge from old age. And I was really ready to be done with fur everywhere.)
