We have a "litter robot." I'm pretty sure I actually first heard of it here on DCUM--and I will tell you it changed my life! Yes, it's outrageously expensive for a litter box, but it is worth it!
Instead of scooping daily, we just change the tray every few days. We also have one "regular" litter box that we keep in our basement.

My boyfriend had originally gotten one cat, then took in 2 kittens from the shelter that had been abused, then acquired a stray that kept hanging out at his apartment. I had a cat. When we got married, it was a 5 cat household.
But, whatever. 
There really isn't much difference between 3 and 5, as long as you are on top of cleaning (fur everywhere!) Remember that adding a cat is likely a 15-20 year further commitment. (We are currently a no cat household - everyone passed over the rainbow bridge from old age. And I was really ready to be done with fur everywhere.)

As long as you have the money, space and energy to maintain them, you can do it. Just be aware that as the number of cats goes up, so do your odds that one or more will engage in territorial marking behavior. A piss war is not pleasant for anyone.

About 6 years ago we wanted a cat. We went to our local shelter, found a cat that seemed perfect...and voila! We had a cat.
about 3 years later, my son was camping with some friends, found a kitten in the woods... and long story short, we now had 2 cats.
About a year after that, we were at a local Petsmart that has "cat adoptions" from a local rescue...one of the cats literally REACHED OUT to me and mewed...3 cats.
That same rescue, I follow them on facebook. And there is cat with a "sob story." We actually visited him the other day (at the Petsmart) and he is SO sweet. I feel so bad.
How crazy is 4 cats?
