Why don't you just ask about age composition directly to the school you are interested in. Will likely get more accurate info?

We had summer girls, who were tall and sensitive. SFS, gds, Beauvoir and k-X all wanted them for K, on time. They offered no feedback on the redshirting phenomenon. I heard a certain religious-affiliated preschool advises anyone applying to dc privates to redshirt.
Our kids were ready for a new, next step so started as young 5 yos at a Big 3. But, we stand ready to change schools due to social aspects - whether driven by older redshirted kids or just the small fishbowl that is dc privates for 13 years- or addl needs (sports, arts) any time.
It is so difficult to pick a school, and nowadays a start grade too?!?!, for a 4 or 5 yo.

I'm currently overdue with a boy and my older kid is at an area private that uses a Sept 1 start date. Do you know when this encouragement happens? I'd like him to do PK2 twice rather than start PK2 when he's just turned 3.

Only 1 or 2 a year, IME. Parents are learning it is not a great idea.

Boys develop later socially. I totally understand why a summer birthday boy parent would not want to rush their child. Move along if it angers you.

Nearly all independent schools in the area strongly encourage redshirting for boys, amd in some cases, girls. I guess they don’t agree with the dcum geniuses about how horrible it is.

Well you cannot make this decision in a silo any longer. It used to be well, my kid is ready to sit, focus, learn. Or not.
Now it is, is my kid socially, academically, behaviorly, able to be the youngest by 12-18 mos in his/her class grade year after year after year.
Other parents decision to redshirt absolutely affects the class dynamic.

Don’t start your kid early and then complain about redshirting!

No elementary school will let you start a 4 year old in Kindergarten.

My son has a July bday and started at 5. His class had 16 total kids and out of the 7 boys, only 1 other was 5. The rest of the boys who had bdays during the school year celebrated turning 7.
Only 1 girl celebrated turning 7. Others were 5 turning 6 or 5 all year like my kid.

In my kids class, 3 out of 4 summer birthday boys had been held back. There were two summer birthday girls who started on time. I think that’s pretty typical.

Three summer bday preschoolers or toddlers here. What do the private schools here have in terms of % of K kids already 6 yo when they start or PK kids already 5? I’ve been hearing things from parents that it’s over half and not just summer kids. Is that high or normal?
