Are the math classes required? In most schools, either the school would have other options (e.g. you can take AP Stats after BC Calc) or they waive the 4 year requirement for a student who has passed the highest class in the school.

That will happen to my son for his senior year possibly. He is at an IB school as a sophomore. If he decides to take HL 1 this year, he will take HL 2 next year, then have to drive to McLean to take Multivar and LA for senior year.

Yes, high school senior. There's just a handful of the kids taking it -- combination of this being one of the (if not the) smallest high schools in Fairfax and drawing from schools with smaller AAP populations (which is how you accelerate in math in Fairfax).

Apparently this has been the practice for several years -- I pushed the guidance counselor to make sure kids know it when they sign up for the class, since it wasn't clear to us. And yes, they're not providing a bus.

The school can not require that a child drive to take a math class. There is too much risk.

Yes but I could not imagine there not being at least a few kids at every high school taking higher math.

They need a minimum number for a class and I believe that is 19.

Although a couple of the kids in my kid's class stepped down from the advanced math track into AB calc junior year instead of BC calc, and are no longer on the track for the highest 12th grade math track. They are all really smart kids but decided they are not interested in STEM (humanities kids) or want to approach calculus at a slower pace to really get down the fundamentals instead of barreling through it.

Perhaps that is happening at your kid's school OP?

I just learned that my child will need to drive to another FFX school to take multivariable calculus and linear algebra. Are there other high schools besides Falls Church where this is the case? And has this happened in the past? I'm frustrated that they didn't give us advanced warning.
