He should be able to talk. He sounds like a person who needs attention and demands it in a childish way. Very annoying type.

When he exhibited the signs of having a bad day early, you should’ve addressed his first comment and then backed off. Pestering him all day when you already know he’s in a mood isn’t smart, and there aren’t many people who’d react well to that.

I'd give him some space, but leave a very simple note by his bedside. "I love you" simple.

Drive off and go to breakfast yourself next time. Maybe keep driving for a weekend with friends ... or just for a break from Mr Grumpy.

So he's having a bad day and has been snippy. So at lunch you compare yourselves to another couple and complain. When he's obviously already in a bad mood. Then at home, instead of asking him if he's ok, you get on his case.

He's having a bad day. He obviously wants to be alone right now and have some down time. You've NEVER had an off day? Give the guy a break, it's on day

One of my exes had this. I think it was related to his low T and why he has struggled with any LTR.

Is this totally unusual behavior? Has he acted like this before?

He wants to end it with you.

I have no idea what has been going on with him and why he’s being mean.

Examples.

I woke up and asked if he wanted to come and get breakfast weigh me. He responds, “you have a car and you can drive yourself.”

Then we were apartment hunting and he was short and snippy with me. He said what did you want to eat and I responded saying I wanted tacos. He suggested a taco place, I looked it up on yelp and said, “ oh looks like it has bad reviews.”

He snipes, “ do you want to go to a 5 star restaurant?”

...

At lunch I attempt to make small talk but he is quiet and surly. I look at another couple chatting blissfully away and get sad. I whisfully mention how into each other they seem. He says well you don’t like to have fun. You only talk about serious things.
...

Later we were back home and I ask him why he has been pounding on me today. He loses his temper and says I need to stop analyzing everything he says and to leave him alone and storms out.

I have no idea what to do.
