Start with other search tools - such as bigfuture.com from the College Board and enter your child's GPA, test scores and some broad parameters (public, private, region) and see what comes up.

Read a book - like Fiske Guide.

Make a provisional list and look up those schools' Common Data Set online and see what the profile of admitted students is.

Consult school college counselor for feedback on list.

All of the above can and should be done by the student, with parent on the sideline.

"It is not particularly helpful -- and often does not provide any data points for privacy reasons -- for colleges where few kids apply."

It is also often not that helpful for colleges where few students are accepted even if lots of students from your school apply.

So if you can't use it, how do you know where to apply?

Yes it is very helpful for colleges where many, many kids from a high school apply.

It is not particularly helpful -- and often does not provide any data points for privacy reasons -- for colleges where few kids apply.

Our private uses it. I'm like you and just getting started in it.

You typically cannot access Naviance at a private school until the College Counseling folks set up for the student sometime during junior year.

Every school gets its own instance of it. You won't see relevant data until your school -- assuming they use it -- gives you a log in to your school's version.

Did you get a username and password from your child's school?

It’s a records system. Lots of schools use it, but some use ones made by other companies.

For FCPS, it's accessed the your child's blackboard site by clicking the "Family Connection 24-7" and then going to the colleges tab. I'm not sure how other school districts do it.

My kid's school doesn't start for a couple more weeks, that's why I'm not calling the school, and instead asking here.

I fumbled around in the site but didn't find anything relevant.

So assuming our school is a subscriber, is this something where your school gives you a code and then you can use it?

TIA!
