I'm a Seaton family and this sounds pretty right on to me. We would stay at Seaton till 4th, but would not consider Cardozo. We would consider moving into the Deal/Hardy--> Wilson zone right around middle school.

Make sure you have a reserve plan. This past spring there 30+ kids who applied from our DCPS elementary to one of the private K-12s in DC for 6th grade. Only about 5 got a spot anywhere and they were by in large "recruited" athletes or minorities.
(just like college!). We were all taken by surprise at how difficult it was to get in... there were 10 applicants per spots minimum.

Jefferson at the moment. With the additional safeties of private school or (more likely) moving.

By the time that OP's kid is in 5th grade, there could certainly be a different group of schools that she'd be interested in. Or the feeders to Cardozo might change.

I think supporting the feeder pattern is a great idea in principle, and every little bit helps, but Cardozo has a long way to go. What it really takes is feeder school parents willing to put in some work even though it won't improve fast enough for them to send their own kids there.

Seaton parent here with plans to stay through 4/5. As far as middle goes, I honestly don’t know. There are several possible outcomes that could occur. I can’t guarantee that my family will stay in the DC region or perhaps our particular house... but if we do stay put, we will try to Lottery into a good option. Our family is not a huge fan of the charter system, so we will try for a public option that fits our commute. In the meantime, we are doing what we can to learn about the options, understand the available data, weed out the false information, etc. Perhaps we will find ways to support the feeder pattern- but we haven’t really looked into that.

Honestly, I have always wondered about this. It seems like Seaton is doing so well, and Garriison increasingly so-- really the main issue is middle school. I know a lot of people will leave anyway because they live in small condos, of course, so maybe that's sapping the motivation. But I don't think Cardozo Middle School is anyone's plan. The data that's publicly available about the school is pretty bleak.

If I were a Seaton parent, I would probably try to lottery into something better, as that can get easier as years go by. And I'd keep an eye on Jefferson, Stuart-Hobson, Eliot-Hine, and even McKinley Middle. They all seem more promising than Cardozo. I really feel like a middle school doesn't stand a chance if it's sited within a troubled high school.

Hi,

We are entering PK 3 at Seaton. We are so excited to join the community and hear good things about the school. I’m sure we will get to know people and find out more it I was wondering if current parents with young kids (PK - 1) have thoughts about MS and HS? Will you stay through 5 or eventually go private? I honestly don’t know much about the MS and HS that Seaton feeds in to. Thanks!
