Zahlfan wrote:Just curious about when people were able to afford a house in the DC area. I purchased my first house at age 39 (I didn't have any help, and I purchased by myself). I am wondering whether most people purchase their first house with some help from family (and jointly with a partner).

I think most people who were raised here and stayed here got help from mommy and daddy

Age 30 in 2009. I put in 80% of the down-payment and fiance put in the balance. It was all our earned money, no gifts, although our parents have been generous in other ways.

We are married and still live in the house.

We also were comfortable combining finances and renting the basement to roommates to supplement our mortgage. We're now 40 and on house #4, an investment property and a vacation home that we rent out on occasion when we are not using it.

So, you didn’t get into grad schools then?

Huh? Reading is fundamental.
