What is your interest rate for that? Have you checked with your back to see if they'll give you a car loan with better terms?

That was one of my concerns but both my husband and father said it wasn't an issue. I put a very limited amount of miles on my cars because I work from home so I wouldn't be racking up miles on it. My last car was a mazda cx-5 and I bought it brand new and 3 years later, only had 27,500 miles on it.

Op here- We are starting fertility treatment next month and hope to be pregnant within the next few months so I'd rather not buy an old car with super high milage (100k plus) as I want this to be a safe and reliable car that will last us years.

NP. $4k and another $4k will get you an old car and a new engine. Barring transmission issues you’ll get more mileage out of the old car.

Dealers don’t bargain on used cars. They really don’t care if they don’t sell it. You’re in a take it or leave it.

OP here- thanks everyone. I guess I was used to the whole "don't pay full price!!!" logic. I did see the car in person on Tuesday evening and test drove it with my husband. I really liked it a lot. It's in great shape, only one previous owner and has the updated technology package which I like/wanted (blue tooth, navigation & back up camera). Only thing I was hesitant on was the miles which is a bit over 68,000 but my husband said that was fine. The price on the paper attached to the car window was also $14,927 so that's why I didn't really believe that it was their "internet price" as the car sticker said the same price but I could be wrong.

I guess my biggest issue is the terms too. He's trying to put me in a 72 month loan on it at a pretty high interest rate which I can't be upset about since again, my credit is not great. I was hoping to not go over 60 months but again, the finance manager was admant on all these terms. My monthly payment was only going to be around $278/month which is great but doing the math on everything makes me feel like Ill be way over paying for this car with the 72 month loan plus putting $4k down, etc.

At many dealers the "online" price is lower than the price you would see if you walked in, not always, and they will not budge. I learned long ago that you can go nuts trying to get the best deal at a car dealership -- they will always win, no matter what you think. The best thing to do is set yourself a price and be happy with it rather than trying to think that you got the best deal possible or squeezed a few hundred dollars out of them. These days with all the ifnormation that is available it is very easy to determine whether the price is fair, trying to determine whether the price is the best you can get, well that is not so easy.

Car-buying is not always the haggle-fest of yesteryear. We’ve purchased 2 cars at the “best” price listed by the dealer. Another car was purchased at jelly blue book quote. What’s magical about $14k?

It's a 2016 car. So assuming it's a used car, he may be about at his lowest number to make any profit depending on what he paid for it. Seems this is a very good price for that car assuming everything is fine with it. Did you see the car in-person? It may have a different price on the lot versus internet.

Often the online price is their bottom line offer. Have you checked prices on that model elsewhere? If it's a reasonable price and that's the car you want, I wouldn't get hung up on trying to get them to come down from there.

Sometimes they can't go lower. Figure out what you want to pay and then contact a few different dealers to see if they'll match your price.

I went and drove a 2016 Ford Edge SE and loved it. Online price and price on the car is $14,987. I went through the whole pre approval with the salesman and finance manager and got approved. (Back story- my credit is not great so I wasn’t sure what I’d get approved for but I told them I could put $4k down and hoped that’d help). I was emailing back and forth all day with the finance manager and he finally told me I was approved but I’d need to put $4,380 down and my payment would be around $278/month. I asked him what I was paying for the car and he said the online price of $14,987. There is no way I’m paying full price and my husband said no way. I called my dad (I’m 28 and still ask him for car advice) and he said no way. He said they are screwing me big time and that I should say I’ll pay $14k or walk away. I called the finance manager back and he said he has no room to move on the price of the car and was adamant about it. My dad said the whole deal screws me and not to move forward so I told the manager that unless he can do better, I’m walking. This was an hour before they closed so I didn’t hear back from him. Does anyone have any advice on trying to get him to lower the price or get me a better deal? Or should I just walk ?
