I've had five chemical pregnancies -
Incredibly, we get pregnant really quickly, but getting past that 6 week point is impossible. Anyway, following every single one I tried right away (2 wks after loss)to get pregnant, and it never works, BUT each time I get prengnt the follwing cycle (6 wks after loss). It seems unlikely to be a coincidence. And we're pregnant now, at 4 1/2 weeks.

I did have several positive home pregnancy tests and a negative blood test from the doc. Very frustrating. I started spotting 8 days after ovulation so I was sure it was implantation blood...but it never stopped. It was so light though that I didn't think it was my period. When I got a positive pregnancy test a few days later I was ecstatic! I went to the doctor for a blood test, took a few more HPTs the next day while waiting for the test results and they were all positive. I was so excited to get the news from my doctor that I was definitely pregnant....but it came out negative. They called it a Chemical Pregnancy. Now the bleeding has totally stopped after 8 days (usually I only bleed for 4 days and much heavier). Now I am waiting to see if I get a "real" period or if I will ovulate in a few weeks or what. Very sad, we've been TTC for about 9 months now. The nurse said doctors always advise waiting one cycle before trying again, but she said if I came in pregnant in a few weeks she wouldn't be mad at me. I think I'll keep taking ovulation tests until I get a positive and go ahead and try this month. I kind of feel like since I didn't have a full period maybe I have a better uterine lining and an egg will be able to implant better. Who knows.

This is the OP. I had positive home tests and then a positive blood test (qual.). A few days after the blood test, I started bleeding. A quant. blood test the following day was 2.5 (negative).

To the 10:00: It depends on the type of test you had and when it was taken. If you had a blood test before a missed period, there is a chance that is could show up as negative and you could still be pregnant. If it was after a missed period, the chances of a healthy pregnancy are not as good.
Different labs have different cut off points for "positive" results, some of which are higher than what an early detection home test would pick up. You can test your urine several time over the next few days and ask for a repeat blood test if they are still positive.

Well, I did some internet (very scientific ) research on your behalf. It seems that the blood test you had yesterday that said negative is qualitative and just measures yes or no. It is not that sensitive, so if the HCG is there but is under 25 it may not show up as "yes". The one they sent off is quantitative and will measure the amounts to the smallest degree...so if it is there it will say so. Some urine tests are actually more sensitive than the qual. blood test.

However, on the negative side, apparently HCG clears out of blood faster than it does urine, so if it's just a chemical pregnancy it may have already cleared the blood and is still lingering in the urine....

for anyone who had a chemical pregnancy -- did you get positive (several) home pregnancy tests and then at the same time a negative blood test at the doctor's office?

This is the OP. I wanted to thank everyone for their responses. It has been an odd month trying to chart. I still have yet to ovulate 4 weeks later, despite many signs that it was going to happen. I'm waiting on AF and we plan to give it another try this next cycle.

Thanks!

OP, I am sorry to hear about the chemical pregnancy. We had the same experience and it's really hard. We tried again the next month and I am now 2 months pregnant. So far everything looks great. I just wanted to reach out and wish you luck and tell you to keep trying.

I had two chemical pregnancies. My cycle returned to pretty normal within a month of each of them. I was advised to wait until after one cycle had passed before trying again, which I did. I want to let you know that I now have two DC. I had the chemical pregnancies before we had our first, so I was really down. Anyhow, good luck. I am sure it will work out. I actually think it can be viewed as a good sign and that you are able to get pregnant.

I just wanted to thank the PP for mentioning that just because we call this a chemical pregnancy, for some the loss is just as real. I had never heard this term before I had one, and I found it very insensitive that my doctor acted like it was no big deal. Have a new doctor now and am trying again.

I think the point you're making is that because OP wasn't as far along her hormone levels weren't as high as she should be back to normal sooner. But I just wanted to point out that a "chemical pregnancy" is a miscarriage and some women find it insensitive to say otherwise. I'm sure you didn't intend that, but I just wanted to mention it. In a chemical pregnancy, the egg is fertilized but doesn't implant.

I'm sorry for your loss, OP. I ovulated about 17 days after my miscarriage (not chemical). My lp was really short that cycle and I o'ed a little later on the second cycle. But things are getting back to normal relatively quickly. I would imagine you won't notice huge differences in your cycles and you'll be back to normal in no time. Take care of yourself.

I think the reason it is called a chemical pregnancy is really that you have your period and ordinarily wouldn't even know you were pregnant. So it's not a miscarriage per se.

This also means that you really already got your period as scheduled so there's no need to wait. That's good news!

I had a miscarriage and it took two months to even get a period after the D&C and six months for my cycles to be regular again. (Part of the reason is the hormone level being so high, which wasn't the case for you)

I know it's hard, but you're in a much better position this way as far as your body being back to normal.

I had the same experience as the PP, normal cycle after the pregnancy, and began trying the next month. Good luck!

I had a chemical and didn't let that stop me from trying the very next period. I looked at is as though if I wasn't charting I would have never had known I was pregnant. If yours ended at 4 weeks that is pretty much the same time as you would have gotten your period.

My cycle was normal immediately following the chemical.

I had a chemical pregnancy a couple of weeks ago. I am charting now and waiting for one complete cycle before trying again. I was 4 weeks.

I was wondering if anyone had any insight on how long it will take my cycle to get back to normal. I know everyone is different. I have been charting for almost a year and I feel a little lost after the miscarriage. Suddenly, I have no idea what is going on with my cycle and it is driving me a little crazy.

Thanks!
