Six to eight inches? That's a ridiculous amount of mulch, and if piled around trees at that depth, will do more harm than good.
Why would I pile it around trees?![]()
I covered bare spots in my yard and no weeds now.

I put 6 or more inches of straw mulch on my vegetable garden. Minimal weeds, minimal need for watering and the straw breaks down nicely by the end of the season. The rest of the yard where I don't have grass get several inches of pine bark mulch. Paths and edges get a thick layer of woodchips that I obtain for free from tree services. It works very well for me. No need for chemicals if you smother the weeds enough.
6" of straw is a bit different than 6" of shredded hardwood mulch or 6" of tree service wood chips
That was the whole point? Different mulch for different purposes. I like gardening, not weeding so a one-time effort at the start of the season keeps things much easier.
