So, to summarize, you get a newsletter that says they are implementing a program to work on social and emotional issues and that they are adding another administrator. You know so little about the school that it doesn't occur to you that they are adding a grade each year. And you know so little about the school that it doesn't occur to you that social and emotional well being is a core tenet of TR and that they constantly do surveys of the kids to understand how they can do better. But your first instinct is to post an open ended question to DCUM!!! Not to email the school or call them?

When I originally saw your post I assumed you were a troll; or perhaps someone really close on the WL who was trying to put yourself over the top. But you are apparently for real. Please do everyone at all charter and DCPS schools a favor and decamp for the burbs now.

Dean of Students is not that unusual. They're sometimes called AP for School Culture or something similar.

Maybe it is an initiative of the new principal? Also the number of students grows every year (they add a grade every year) so I would guess the number of staff will too.

Sometimes these programs indicate a behavior problem that the school is tackling head-on, rather that a behavior problem that the school denies.

Personally I really like having a SEL program and my DD (whose behavior is middling) has really benefited and internalized a lot of the school's SEL concepts.

Returning TR parent. Social-emotional has always been a big part of the school - I read this as just a new framework or model for measuring how they apply it. I don't know what the Dean role is exactly, but seems good to me ... what's bad about having more staff focused on students & families? No special insight, but I didn't read either of these things as indicative of problems, just updates.

I find the dean of students for elementary students is more troubling.

SEL is a big trend in DC and elsewhere. Our school has it and I really like it. I don't think it necessarily indicates a problem, just trendiness.

We are new to TR &recently got our upcoming sy packet with dates, supply lists, etc. It also included information about a the introduction of a soc-emo program and a dean of students.
I don't know why this made me feel as thought they may be experiencing a rise in or high amt of behavioral challenges.

Any news regarding this implementation?
