OP, if you want top notch school without religious fluff, Holton is the by far the best. I would pick STA or Prep over Landon though.

Don’t rule out DC privates too. Many people from Rockville/Bethesda commute to Georgetown Day, Sidwell, STA/NCS, Maret, etc...

Your best bet to get the kids into the same school (assuming co-ed) is Bullis in Potomac, Sandy Spring Friends near Olney or St Andrews in Potomac. St Andrews is episcopal but has a diverse student population. If you’re Jewish, there’s the Charles E Smith Jewish Day School. If you have two boys, you can try Landon. If you have two girls, Holton but Holton is very unlikely to have two spots. Not that it’s easy to find space for 2 kids anywhere last minute.

If you don’t mind two schools, the K-8s are most likely to have a spot for a 5th grader. Try Norwood or Green Acres.

Are your kids boys or girls? A lot of the private schools in the area are single sex.

For girls, the "best" is probably Holton Arms which is in Potomac or Bethesda. Not sure which one technically (my kids are in public). I don't believe Holton has a religious affiliation. Stoneridge, Holy Child and Holy Cross are all Catholic, and girls only. Those 3 are also in the Potomac/Bethesda/Rockville area.

For boys, Georgetown Prep in Rockville/Bethesda is very highly regarded. That's high school only. Mater Dei is an all-boys elementary/middle school that sends a lot of kids to Prep. Prep is a Jesuit school. Landon and The Heights are also options
The Heights is in Potomac. I don't actually know where Landon is.

Bullis is co-ed, and in Potomac, but close to Rockville. I don't know if it has a religious affiliation. Good Counsel is Catholic co-ed in Olney.

For the 5th grader, there are several parochial K-8 schools in the Rockville area - St. James, Christ Episcopal, St. Patrick's, St. Raphael's, St. Elizabeth, St. Mary's. You might have luck finding a spot for this year at one of those. I don't imagine you'll get a spot this year at one of the high school privates. Maybe Bullis or Good Counsel?

I’d call around and see if any of the schools have openings in those grades. Bullis, Sandy Spring Friends School, Good Counsel. The other K-12 are likely filled. There are several K-8 schools around that could work for your younger child.

Are you dead set against public? MoCo has great public schools....

OP - Looking at Rockville area - Kids are 10 and 16. Academically advanced, no specific religious preference though. we dont mind if it is a religious school, but have good programs.

What type of school are you looking for? What grade levels? Religion? Are your kids academically advanced? Have special needs? Private school is pretty vague.

Also, are you prepared for the sticker shock that comes with many independent privates around here? It's way more than most in Texas.

What part of the county? Most of the schools near the DC line or in DC have filled their classes for the fall. You could apply for next year. From Rockville on out, though, there will be openings. Do you have a basic idea what you are looking for?

we will be moving to montgomery county in the fall from Texas - want to enroll kids in the private schools here - are there any back to school events that we should be looking at?
