We have one in one bathroom. I plan to replace the countertop and get rid of it. It's not useful and it means we can only have a low profile toilet. And they definitely look dated to me.

Dislike the look, it screams 1970's. Why not get a bigger medicine cabinet? We have a small bathroom as well and our toiletries fit below or in the medicine cabinet. I'd look on pintrest or container store for options on how to organize your stuff rather than add that lip above the toilet.

We don't leave anything sitting there, but it's handy to have a space to place something you're using, like a hairbrush. Without it there would be NO space. The toilet below is a Toto that's not very tall. No problem servicing it.

As for "dated," if you say so, but it's not the kind of thing I worry about.

OP here. I'm curious: how big is your vanity?

To answer a different question: The part of the counter that's over the vanity is 23.5" wide by 18.75 deep. The counter overhangs the vanity itself by maybe 3/4 " on the front and on the side next to the toilet. Otherwise, vanity and counter are flush against walls. The skinny part of the "banjo" is 26.5 long by 7.75 deep.

The vanity was custom made. It curves (no corner) on the side adjacent to the toilet.

It's a very small bathroom, maybe a tad smaller than the one in the photo you've published. I imagine it wouldn't even meet code if newly built.

Good luck with your project! The best part of ours is the skylight over the shower. You can't imagine how great it feels to use that shower!

A wall mounted toilet doesn't do anything for counter space.

+1

And dated. Don’t do it.

We did this in one small bathroom and I grew up in a house with one. It’s called a banjo top. I like the added space.

Does the banjo top make it difficult to service the toilet?

We have these counters in 2 bathrooms. We call them pork chop counters. They make it so difficult to repair/maintain the toilet tanks!! They are a pain in the butt!

Our architect suggested one of these but I decided not to because of this reason. Adding the counter would have been much more expensive too since it would require a custom vanity rather than an off the shelf model.
