It appears Laura Jane Cohen has similar experience as a parent of a child with autism. Has she been involved with the Advisory Committee for Students with Disabilities (ACSD)?
Interesting. I actually know Laura Jane Cohen and have a lot of respect for her. She definitely has my vote. However, she doesn’t have a child with autism. She has a lot of experience in the special education community for reasons I will let her share! I don’t think it’s my place to discuss her children and their abilities. I can say that she has been a resource and advocate for me when I have been dealing with special education issues at our school. I don’t have any personal experience with Elizabeth Schultz on this front. The only thing I will say about Schultz is that I have seen no evidence of her advocating for special education in FCPS or increased funding in the school board meetings I’ve followed.
Laura Jane is also passionate about school safety but believes, as I do, that our best chance at safer schools centers on a more intervention based approach vice “arming” more school personnel or officers.
I know she also believes in the rights of all of our students to feel safe from bullying for any reason (including their sexual orientation or gender identify etc). She has Q and As and other events coming up (listens on her FB page) that will make more of her positions clear. As I said, she’s a friend but I believe in her objectives and her passion. I look forward to new representation on our school board one day soon!
