My understanding is that many kids will make the HS team but only swim in "exhibition" swims. Competition is very stiff. But not all swim team members swim year round.

Are they year round competitive swimmers?

Its a pretty limited amount and usually the kids who have been swimming year round team are the ones on it. If your kids are year round team, it really will depend on the school. The wealthier/W schools seem to have the most swimmers so those will be much harder (Bethesda, Chevy Chase, Potomac). If they want year round team and are strong, there are multiple private options (search old threads) or the county sponsored RMSC (however tryouts are now so they may have missed them).
